Hyatt Hotels had a successful IPO on Wednesday. The opening price was $25, and the shares ended up $3 - at $28. This morning, I bought some Hyatt at $27.92. I think Hyatt is a good long term investment that should climb in the near term because I think a lot of mutual funds will be attracted to Hyatt. It will take them weeks or months to accumulate a position, and that should drive up the price. I like IPOs of brand names that are following a strong competitor by going public. For example, I successfully bought the Chicago Board of Trade after it followed the Chicago Mercantile Exchange by going public. I also was successful with the Visa IPO, which followed Mastercard. In this case, Hyatt and Hilton are the two strong hotel brands. Hilton was a public company until profitably taken private by the Blackstone Group. |
